One Warrior Mama to Another
I will start by saying that I didn't write all of this myself but it touched so close to home that I wanted to keep it.
It is a personal story touching on my story of having a single mastectomy due to breast cancer but I believe what it says about motherhood can connect ALL mamas.
Here's the passage rewritten from the perspective of a mom of three in her 30s who is now a postpartum doula supporting other mothers:
Dear Kindred Mama Warriors,
As a mother of three who has walked the profound path of a mastectomy, I understand the unique challenges we face. But now, as a postpartum doula, I've witnessed the incredible resilience of mothers like you time and again. It's why I'm so passionate about supporting you through this journey.
Those early days after a mastectomy can feel overwhelming – the whirlwind of emotions, the physical changes, the uncertainty about how you'll nurture your precious babe. I've been there, riding those powerful waves of grief, acceptance, and determination to be the mother you envisioned.
Sweet mama, let me assure you – you haven't lost your ability to love, nurture and nourish your little one, even if breastfeeding looks a little different now. Whether you're able to nurse from one side, use a supplemental system, or transition fully to bottle-feeding, the motherly bond you're creating is truly special.
I know there can be unexpected hurdles when it comes to milk supply or latch after a mastectomy. As your doula, I'll guide you through alternative methods, sharing wisdom from those who've traveled similar paths. But also give yourself grace – the nourishment isn't just physical but emotional too. Those skin-to-skin snuggles, gazing into their eyes, the comfort of your embrace – that's powerful nutrition for the soul.
Looking back, I cherish the community of support I had, from online groups to understanding friends. Finding your tribe of warrior moms who just "get it" can be a gamechanger. You'll have a safe space to share the raw realities with brutal honesty one moment and celebrate tiny wins the next.
Because let's be real – this road gets rocky. There will be days when you're bone-tired and ready to throw in the towel. But you're tougher than you know, fierce mama. In those moments, come back to your "why" – that boundless love for your little one that drove you here. Feel it pulsing through you, fueling your persistence.
I see you, mama. You're a true warrior, crafting your own sacred path of motherhood from the depths of your soul, step by step. Yes, it may look different than you imagined, but those aren't mere marks on your body – they're badges of honor, maps of the lover's journey you've traveled to bring this babe Earthside.
So let your vulnerability meet resilience. Lean on those of us who can lighten the load with experience and empathy. More than anything, know that you're amazing, beautiful, and so damn capable of this wildly precious role.
I'm right here with you, mama. One warrior mother to another, cheering you on and carrying those torches of love and hope to light our way, together.
